The Immutability of Karma

The Story of Bhakt Sadna Kasai

The Shri Bhaktamal contains many profound narratives illustrating the subtle workings of karma – how even seemingly insignificant actions may have consequences that unfold in unexpected ways.

One such story concerns Bhakt Sadna Kasai and the karmic connection between three souls across lifetimes.

The Past Life

Deep in a forest lived a hermit who had taken a lifelong vow of Satya Vrat – never to speak a lie.

Nearby lived a cruel butcher.

One day, a terrified cow escaped from the butcher and ran into the forest. She hid in a dense thicket behind the hermit’s hut.

Soon, the butcher arrived and asked the hermit –

“Mahatma! Did you see a cow running this way?”

The hermit faced a profound dilemma.

If he told the truth, the cow would almost certainly be killed.

If he lied, he would break his sacred vow of truthfulness.

Trying to avoid both, the hermit remained silent – but pointed toward the thicket with his finger.

The butcher followed the gesture, found the cow, and killed her.

According to the traditional account, this seemingly small act created a powerful karmic connection between the cow, the butcher, and the hermit.

The Next Birth

The three were subsequently reborn:

  • The cow was born as an intelligent and wealthy woman.
  • The butcher was born into a noble family as a handsome young man – who would later become Bhakt Sadna.
  • The hermit was born as a pious and disciplined Brahmin scholar.

The former butcher and the former cow were eventually drawn together and married.

Outwardly, their marriage appeared happy. Yet the woman inexplicably experienced a deep aversion toward her husband – without understanding why.

The Hermit’s Karma

One day, the Brahmin scholar – the former hermit – arrived in their town as a wandering mendicant.

He happened to come to the woman’s doorstep.

Seeing his serene and dignified presence, she suddenly became attracted to him and made an improper proposal.

The Brahmin firmly refused.

Humiliated by the rejection, she reacted violently and falsely accused him before the people of the town.

An angry mob gathered.

Without investigating the truth, they seized the innocent Brahmin and cut off both his hands.

The hand that had once pointed toward the hidden cow had now become the very instrument through which the consequences of that past action unfolded.

The Butcher’s Karmic Settlement

But the story did not end there.

That night, while her husband was sleeping, the woman entered the kitchen and picked up a sharp sickle.

In a moment of uncontrollable frenzy, she perceived her husband not as her spouse, but as the butcher from her past life.

She attacked him brutally, leaving him grievously wounded.

Thus, according to this traditional narrative, the suffering once inflicted upon the cow eventually returned to the one who had caused it.

The Deeper Lesson

The story is not merely about punishment.

It invites us to contemplate the extraordinary subtlety of karma.

A gesture that appeared insignificant at the time became part of a chain of consequences spanning lifetimes.

It reminds us that –

No action is truly insignificant.
No intention is completely lost.
And the workings of karma may extend far beyond what the human mind can perceive.

At the same time, the story raises an important spiritual question –

What happens when two dharmas appear to conflict?

The hermit wanted to preserve his vow of truthfulness – but his silence and gesture ultimately contributed to another being’s suffering.

Perhaps the deeper lesson is that spirituality is not merely about following a rule mechanically, but about developing the wisdom and compassion to understand the spirit behind dharma.

Based on the traditional narrative associated with Bhakt Sadna Kasai in Shri Bhaktamal.
